Cable Car Mystery Summary Chapter 27 to 31
Settling in for a night at home with her cat, Amelia begins to worry about George again. She distracts herself by going through her mail, in which she finds a letter addressed to “Amelia Slater—Private”. The return address reads only “George”. There is a second envelope inside the first one, which says, “Open only if something happens to me. – George.” After reading the letter, Amelia gets out her gun.
Returning her attention to George’s house, Amelia sees one of the men emerging with suitcases. Amelia decides to investigate for herself. On George’s property, she first finds a large saw, which appears to have blood on it. After investigating the suitcases, which are packed with clothing in George’s size and accompanied by his heart medication, Amelia sees George’s Masonic ring in the dirt.
Amelia is discovered by one of the men, to whom she provides a flimsy story about looking for her cat. The man tells her that George went to the old country—Greece for a visit. The man, who introduces himself as Eric, tells Amelia that his friend, Rodney, is interested in meeting her and traps her in the garage. Managing to break free, Amelia makes a run for it.
Sam returns home from the boxing match with his friend, Vince, to find the television on, but no Amelia. He finds the letter from George, which explains that his nephew and his friend are “evil men” and that he is afraid for his life. The men, George reveals, are trying to use him to steal from the art museum. He goes on to say that the men have threatened his life, as well as Amelia’s, if he refuses to cooperate.
Amelia uses the San Francisco fog to her advantage to hide, and, when Eric comes near her, she takes him by surprise, hitting him with a crowbar. As Amelia makes a run for it, she is caught by Rodney, who drags her to the house.
Vince manages to wrestle Rodney down and handcuff him, saving Amelia. Amelia swings the crowbar at the now defenseless Rodney, demanding to know where George is.
Amelia explains the timeline of events and her discoveries to Sam and Vince, including the story of how she saw the men loading a body-sized object into the trunk of the car. Vince receives a phone call at the Slaters’ home. After he hangs up, he reveals that the man they know as Rodney may be the infamous “Pillowcase Rapist”, who may have raped as many as ten women. His trademark is placing a pillowcase over his victims’ faces before he rapes them. Amelia realizes that she was about to be the Pillowcase Rapist’s next victim in the garage. The men warn Amelia to be more careful in the future.

Cable Car Mystery Chapter 16 to 26 Summary
Over the next weekend, Amelia notices a strange car outside of George’s house. Meanwhile,
she has not seen George, himself. Finally, she decides to visit her neighbor to find out what is
going on for herself. George seems upset as he explains to Amelia that his troubled nephew,
who has been in and out of jail, has come to visit. He assures her that she is safe, but urges her
to stay away until his nephew leaves, for her own safety.
Bob, an employee of the wax museum, meets with Stan, a reporter from the San Francisco
Examiner. Bob tells Stan that the woman who got pushed of the cable car’s name is Debra
Norton, that she works at the wax museum, and that her hair is now blonde. Bob also adds that
Sam Slater has been showing up at the wax museum a lot lately. Stan agrees to continue
paying Bob for information, as long as the information he provides the Examiner is solid.
Across town, another reporter meets with a source named Ben Compton, who worries that his
involvement will put Debra at risk. Assured by the reporter, Ted, that public knowledge can
help make Debra safer, he provides information regarding the identity of Debra’s sister, Wilma.
The editor decides to run the two conflicting stories about the identity of the redhead side-by-
side, to “show our readers that we take our tips seriously”.
After the story runs, the Slaters worry about Wilma’s safety, as she has now been identified, as
well as having had details about where she works made public. As the Slaters rush to do
damage control, Amelia asks Debra if her ex knows that she has a twin. She tells Amelia that
Carl knew that she had a sister and that her name was Wilma, but, no, she had not told him
that they were twins.
Sam begins to hatch a plan to lure Carl into a trap. Meanwhile, Carl decides that he needs to try
to meet Wilma at the bank where she works.
Ben starts to regret his involvement with the story in The Examiner when he doesn’t see Wilma
come to work for two days. Ben’s guilt is compounded when the bank manager intimates how
betrayed Wilma feels that someone sold her out, and he agrees to keep his ear to the ground
for any leads as to who did so. Carl comes to the bank, where he pushes Ben to introduce him
to Wilma. Since she is not at work, Carl leaves a message for her, “… Tell her I’m watching. I
know where her and her whore sister are now. Tell her I’ll be seeing her real soon.” Before
Carl drives away, Ben manages to commit part of his license plate to memory. Wracked with
guilt, Ben calls Sam Slater and tells him that he has “done a terrible thing”.
Ben visits the Slaters, and Amelia is struck by how young and afraid he seems. He admits that
he was the source for one of the Examiner stories and tells the Slaters that he feels “like Judas
selling Jesus for 40 pieces of silver”, particularly after Carl showed up at the bank to look for
Wilma. The Slaters advise Ben to stay as far away from Carl as possible.
At home that night, Amelia worries about George, unsettled by their last conversation about his
nephew. At 2 AM, she is woken from her sleep. As she looks for her cat, she notices that the
car she had seen in George’s driveway was backed up to the garage with its trunk open. Two
men are carrying an oblong object wrapped in a plaid blanket, tied by two ropes. As Amelia
watches from her bedroom window, they drive away.

Cable Car Mystery Summary Chapter 8 - 15
Over lunch, they discuss the case. The question that keeps eluding them is, Who is Debra Norton, really? Sam follows a lead that brings him to an old house, where he comes face-to-face with the missing Debra Norton, as well as several other people, who are armed. Debra softens when she discovers that John is the one who hired the Slaters to find her. Sam discovers that Debra and her sister are, in fact, twins, and that it was not Debra Norton he saved on the cable car, but, instead, saved her sister, Wilma.
After having the history of Debra and Wilma explained to him, Sam rushes home to tell his wife all that he has discovered. Debra's name is not Debra at all-- it is Whitney. Whitney's ex, Carl, had mistaken her twin sister for her, which is why he had pushed her off of the cable car. Carl, as Sam has been told, suffered big gambling losses, which led to drinking, worsening his already out-of-control temper.
Carl is dedicated to finding his ex-wife, so, unbeknownst to Sam, Carl begins following him. Meanwhile, Amelia's neighbor, George, with whom she enjoys gardening, tells her that his nephew and his partner have shown up, warning her to stay away, because he doesn't want her to be exposed to any danger.
